THE GARDEN DESIGN....

I have tried to keep the first two designs with plants that are easily obtained.

A=1 plant of PINEAPPLE SAGE
B=4 plants BASIL varieties
C=4 SAGE varieties D=1 plant LEMON BALM
E=SPIKE LAVANDER
F=2 LEMON THYME
G=2 VARIEGATED LEMON THYME
H=2 each LEMON VERBENA
I=1 ANISE HYSSOP
J=1 HYSSOP
K=1 row CHIVES
L=1 row GARLIC CHIVES
M=3 SALAD BURNET
N=1 GERMANDER
O=6 SCENTED GERANIUMS

Approximate garden size: (2' walk space alotted) 12x8

This design would be classified as a formal garden. It is because it is symmetrical-same on both sides. If you check out the plants, however, you will see a difference of variety. This is fine, because the size is what keeps it in uniform with the other side. I have kept the four outer corners of this garden with taller plants, and kept the center of the walkway with focal point plants. This one has my favorite: lemon verbena. Since this plant has a woody, bare base, I would fill in the area with a variegated lemon thyme. For those of you who know your plants, notice the placement of height variations. When planting a garden of any type, keep lower growing plants towards the front of the viewing area.

A=lots of plants of RUE
B=3 plants PINEAPPLE SAGE planted centered and close
C=2variegated THYME varieties D=1 plant ANISE HYSSOP
E=a row GARLIC CHIVES
F=2-5 PURPLE RUFFLES BASIL
G=row of CHIVES
H=2 each LEMON VERBENA
I=1 Mini CHILE PEPPERS
J=2-3 startsSALAD BURNET
K=1 start GOLDEN OREGANO
L=LEMON BALM
M=LAVANDER-spike
N= PARSLEY
O=1 ROSEMARY

With this garden design, you will see that a mini-hedge has been formed by RUE. Rue does come back, and it can be started by cuttings. Read more on Rue in the herb section. With a hedge like this one, you may want to keep a couple or three starts of the same herb in case your hedge gets stepped on, or a branch falls upon it and breaks up the shape. By keeping extra plants somewhere else, you can easily re-place a dying plant or a broken hedge.

This is again, a formal garden, keeping the center of the garden in a taller plant and keeping everything "centered".

Rue is a good hedge plant, so is lavander. A birdbath or birdhouse can be used for the centerpiece in this garden.
